#Pre-order ‘Freedom’s Path by Linda Carroll-Bradd, Book 3 in The Deerbourne Inn Series

Freedom’s Path, Book 3 in Deerbourne Inn series by Linda Carroll-Bradd

The story behind the story

Several years ago, I saw a reference in a historical blog about quilts being used as signals for the Underground Railroad. As someone who has quilted in the past, I was interested but didn’t pursue it until I saw the title of Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad. I read that book and a firsthand account of a man who served on the railroad titled The Underground Railroad from Slavery to Freedom.

Learning about the role women played in this moral dilemma brought the heroine to life in my mind. As I researched maps of the actual routes, I crossed my fingers and was thankful a known path cut through Vermont.  Figuring out the role of the hero was easy because I cast him as her worst nightmare–a soldier hunting down abolitionist activity in her town. With Colin and Sidonie on opposite sides of the controversial issue in 1855, I had no trouble developing the plot that I hope readers find interesting.

BLURB

Working as a maid in the Deerbourne Inn gives freedom-fighter Sidonie Demers the perfect cover for helping escaping slaves travel farther along the Underground Railroad. The patterns in her quilts serve as messages directing them to the safest route. The cause is a personal one for octoroon Sidonie whose mother and grandmother escaped bondage years earlier.

Army Corporal Colin Crawford arrives in Willow Springs, in disguise as a salesman, to ferret out abolitionist activity. Raised in a state that forbids slavery, he’s conflicted about upholding the Fugitive Slave Act but believes in laws and fulfilling his duty. The attraction between Colin and Sidonie is evident and irresistible, but what will happen when their true identities are revealed?

EXCERPT

As he waited for Kevyn’s footsteps to fade, Colin finished his tart. His mind whirled with a topic that he worried might be too forward. After a swallow of coffee, he angled his head and met her gaze. “I saw how you broke that man’s hold. Smart move.”

Eyes wide, she gasped, rested a hand on the table edge, and crouched next to the end. “Oh, please don’t tell Missus Deerbourne that I stomped on a guest’s foot.” Her dark brows drew together. “I’m not sure she’d view my action in the same way you do.”

Her response rankled. Wasn’t the innkeeper concerned for the safety of her workers? He wished he could offer comfort by covering her hand with his. “Can you not carry a small knife in a pocket to protect yourself?”

A laugh escaped as she shook her head then gripped the band of her hat and pulled it lower on her forehead. “Not an appropriate accessory for someone in my position.”

Colin disliked the idea of her being vulnerable to a man’s mauling. “The foot stomp can take a man by surprise, but often not for long enough to effect an escape. Might I demonstrate another move that guarantees a longer distraction?” He sorted through the various moves involved in his ranger tactical training for the one most effective to someone her size. Leverage was what was needed to counter a larger foe.

“I am eager to learn.” She set the tray on the table. “What do I have to do?”

Bracing both hands on the table, he pushed himself to a stand and took a couple steps away from the bench. “Walk toward me like you’re about to grab my arms.”

A blush rose in her cheeks, and she averted her gaze. “Oh, I couldn’t, Mister Crawford.”

Her modesty produced a chuckle. “Miss Demers, don’t worry. You won’t hurt me. Remember, you’re learning a new skill.”

After a nod, she stepped forward with her arms outstretched and fingers spread wide. “Like this?”

“Keep walking.” He balanced his weight on the balls of his feet. When she came within reach, he grabbed the thumb of her left hand and bent it backward.

“Ow.” She contorted her body, back arching in the opposite direction.

He knew her movements were instinctual, with her body acting on reflex to reduce the pressure. “See how you moved to get away from the pain.” He released his hold with reluctance, because he’d enjoyed the slide of her soft palm in his.

Author: Barbara Edwards
Dixie was my friend and companion for years after we adopted her. She kept me exercising by insisting I get up from my chair and take her out. She would eat anything I ate except for clams in marinara sauce. When she crossed the Rainbow Bridge I cried for days. Then I took the memories and wrote this story. I hope you enjoy it.

Blurb: Ellen Carter deeply grieves for her husband Dan, but at least she still has Dixie, her beloved Malinois. However, soon Dixie leaves her too. But the faithful dog cannot rest easy in heaven while her mistress is unhappy. Dixie pleads with the Archangel Michael to let her send help, and intercedes for Ellen in the only way she can. But will Ellen get the message, and more importantly, will she accept Dixie’s gift?
Sexy newcomer Michael Burke can barely take enough time from his successful restaurant for a decent night’s sleep, let alone romance. Still, he is intrigued by the beautiful widow and can’t resist entering her shop. Sparks fly, and when Ellen has an accident in a snowstorm, he comes to her rescue. Trapped by a blizzard and aided by Dixie’s Gift, Ellen and Michael find more than shelter–they find love.

Excerpt:
He brushed a wisp of her hair from her cheek. It clung like spider silk to his fingers.
He rubbed the strand and his heart raced. When her lips parted, he bent forward to taste their soft curve.
Sweet, so sweet, he thought as her mouth melded with his. His hands slowly slid from her slender shoulders to her waist. Soft as a feather, she sighed. Her curves fit against his hard chest like matching puzzle pieces.
The lights blinked, dimmed, and then flared back on.

Alright, I wanted a catchy hook to drag you to this post.
I’m sharing info with you today.
It’s not easy to find those promo sites where you can post your new release, get a review or cheaply send tweets to thousands.
I didn’t purposely collect so many places.
When I knew my short Christmas story, Dixie’s Gift, would be released this autumn, I started collecting places. Theses are all from my twitter feed. Every one of them followed me and I followed them back. When a likely place popped up, I added it to my favorites with a bookmark.
Yikes! Little did I know I’d find such a varied treasure lode.
I’m not saying I’ve used them all, or recommend one or the other. I’m saying I checked all of them and am using a few I found good for me.

Dixie’s Gift by Barbara Edwards #Cover reveal #TWRP #AHAShare

Dixie's Gift
Dixie’s Gift

The cover for Dixie’s Gift is a sweet, well-drawn depiction of my dog, Dixie, a beautiful female Belgian Malinois that we adopted. She was my companion and friend for more then ten years before cancer took her.
Everyone who’s lost a beloved pet will understand my sorrow.
I turned the feelings into a short Christmas story of lost love and hope.

Dixie’s Gift is coming soon from The Wild Rose Press.

Today is National Dog Day and I’m posting photos of Dixie, the inspiration for my upcoming release ‘Dixie’s Gift’. Dixie’s Gift is my Christmas Story from The Wild Rose Press.

Dixie was my dog, a beautiful Belgian Malinois. She slept at my feet, took me for walks, loved the people I love and held a large portion of my heart.

I’m not sure how old she was since we didn’t know when we adopted her, but she lived with us for ten years.

Dixie loved to travel. From Maine to Florida to Colorado and Utah, Dixie hung her head out the window of the truck.

When she was diagnosed with bone cancer, I cried for a week. She crossed the rainbow bridge with me petting her head. It hurt, but I owed it to her to stand by those last moments.

#Guest Kim McDermott, author of Hiding #TWRP

Welcome to Kim McDermott, a fellow Rose.

Why I Wrote Hiding?

Hiding_w9495_300       Unfortunately, many women in modern society experience dating abuse as does Teresa Worthington in Hiding. Teresa learns to stand up for herself and gain independence by successfully pursuing a talent for painting. The idea for the story literally started with a “blank canvas” the brick and stucco back wall of a courtyard behind a Parisian hotel. This wall just tempted the imagination and invited creativity.

Because, like my character, I also like to paint murals, I wanted to pursue the idea of creating beauty out of bare bricks.

About the author

Kim McDermott was born and raised in Charleston, SC where she graduated valedictorian of Middleton High School and cum laudi from the College of Charleston with a B.A. in English.  She received a Masters Degree in Counseling from the Citadel and is a Licensed Professional Counselor in S.C. She has nine years of experience in guidance.  She is also a Nationally Certified High School English and Language Arts teacher who worked for Charleston Country School District for 28 years as both an English teacher and a guidance counselor.  She is retired and currently teaches English and Creative Writing part-time as an Adjunct English Professor at Trident Technical College.

She has free lanced for numerous regional and national publications including: The State, Charleston Magazine, Standard, Blue Ridge Country, Reader’s Digest, Christian Single, Home Life, Straight, Evangel, Smokey Mountain Magazine, and others.  She won the Blue Ridge Christian Writer’s award in l987.  Her first book, All Work, All Play published by Marco. She has two children’s books, a chapter book aimed at elementary age children entitled The Underwear Tree and a picture book, Les Petits Gardes. With Margie Clary, she co-authored South Carolina Lighthouses published by Arcadia Publishing. Her latest book is a suspense romance entitled Hiding published by The Wild Rose Press.

Her manuscript won Honorable Mention in the Louisiana Romance Writers 2011 Contest and was a finalist in the Daphne Du Maurier Kiss of Death Contest at the National Romance Writer’s 2012 Conference. In the l980s she wrote two plays that were performed locally: Song of Susanna about the life of Susanna Wesley, mother of John Wesley and Stede Bonnet the Gentlemen Pirate.

Blurb

Alex illuminated the crypt with his light, and Teresa tried to interpret what she saw: uneven walls, a doorway surrounded by orbs, a floor littered with dried reeds. No, they weren’t reeds; they were bones. And the orbs were skulls! The catacombs! Her heart pounded in her chest like a jackhammer. Alex had withdrawn his knife. The blade glittered in the dim light of the torch which cast luminous shadows on the walls. What better place to kill someone? What was another set of bones among the many? Lord, as you helped the Christians long ago who met secretly in catacombs, help me.

#Review – Shift Happens, Carus Series, J.C. McKenzie from Barbara edards

Review Shift Happens, Carus Series, J.C. McKenzie

ShiftHappens_w8140_750Shift Happens begins with a murder. Not a normal murder, but an assassination by Andrea, a shape-shifter working for a government agency. Only he’s not dead, she’s not your usual shifter and the government is hunting her, not giving her assignments. From there it gets better.

Andrea, or Andy as she insists she be called, is a different kind of shifter who lives in a time when paranormal forms are out in the open. J.C. McKenzie has made changes to the usual shape-sifter, werewolf, vampire, witch and even demons from the accepted stereotypes. Enough to increase the tension, but not enough to jar me from the increasingly twisted plot.

Andy is battling hurtful memories that keep her from trusting the werewolf Wick who lures her to be his mate. I liked the uncertainty in their building attraction. In fact I liked all the characters from the well-portrayed hero to the multiple villains.

With help from Wick, she works to unravel why she is targeted to take the fall for the attempted murder, what is Carus and her longing to mate. She must also protect her shifter secrets as she battles with changing enemies.

The story ended too soon for me. I want more and am looking forward to the next in the series.

I gave this five stars on Amazon, Goodreads and Paranormal Love Features with five dragons

#MFRWAuthor Barbara Edwards & Her Dogwood Tree

Easter and the dogwood tree by Barbara Edwards

2012-05-15 01.27.47 The best part about Easter is the flowers. Lilies, Daffodils, Tulips, Hyacinth and Lilacs give color to the season. I also have a dogwood tree.

2012-05-15 01.27.23One of the legends associated with Easter is the dogwood tree.  According to legend the dogwood was the tree the Romans used in Palestine to make crosses which were used in their crucifixions. The myth claims the dogwood riled the Oak in size and strength. When Jesus was ordered to be crucified, the dogwood felt bad that it was used to crucify the Son of God.  On the cross that dark afternoon Jesus was touched by the sorrow which the dogwood showed. He promised that the dogwood tree would never again have to suffer such a fate.  Therefore the dogwood became the twisted short tree it is today instead of a stately oak-like creation.

The four petals include two shorter and two longer. The center resembles a crown of thorns in the middle and there are nail prints on the petals.

IMG_0001Like all myths, there is no evidence that the Romans used dogwood trees for their this purposes.  The dogwood is not even common to the Palestine region.

daffodil I’m Barbara Edwards and a native New Englander. I’m a graduate of the University of Hartford with a Master’s degree in Public Administration. I write poetry for myself and novels when I need to tell a longer tale. I’m fascinated by the past so naturally turned to writing historical romance. The dark paranormal stories evolve from nightmares. The romance comes from my belief in people’s basic goodness and longing for love.

Ancient Curse Blurb:

Evil never dies.  And this time it wanted Rainie.  It wanted more than her life, it wanted her soul.

The artifacts Rainie Gamble handled came from every era and she could read their past with a touch. After her Father’s deceit, she’d lost her beloved career until Thomas hired her.

Thomas Broquette needed Rainie for more than her psychic ability. She would unknowingly bring her father into his reach. Thomas needed him to return the stolen paintings in Mason’s estate. He needed Rainie to destroy the evil items Mason left behind. Then he realized he needed her for much, much more.

Can she let go of the past, before it destroys her future?

All Toby Lawson wanted was to go to college to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher and to be free of her alcoholic mother and the painful memories of finding her and the guy Toby loved kissing. But when her mother nearly burns the house down, Toby must put her dreams on hold and return home to care for her. The only time she isn’t lonely and miserable is when she’s listening to her heartthrob, Elvis Presley. His music takes her away, helps her escape from everything wrong in her life.

Noah Rivers has always loved Toby, but no matter what he says, and even though she knows her mother initiated the kiss, and that he didn’t kiss her back, she can‘t seem to get past what happened. He soon realizes that the true problem lies in Toby’s belief that she’s not good enough for him and in her fear that she will be just like her mother.

What will it take to prove to her that she deserves to be happy, and that he would give anything to be the man to make her dreams come true?

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Mapleton, Tennessee, November, 1957

Toby Lawson closed her eyes and shut out all sounds of the diner, except for Elvis Presley’s voice. He was crooning about how she was the only one for him…no matter where he went or what he did… he’d spend his whole life loving her…

Rough hands landed on her waist and shattered the fantasy. She caught a whiff of hair tonic and too much cologne, and she snapped her eyes open. Wes Markham’s hateful face replaced the image of Elvis’ beautiful, crooked smile and smoldering blue eyes.

“Let me go.” She gritted her teeth, keeping her voice low. If her boss, Mr. Winstead, knew there was trouble on account of her, he’d explode. He’d barely let her have the job in the first place. Everyone in Mapleton knew the Lawson women were trouble.

“Come on, honey. If you like that hip swivel, Presley ain’t the only one who’s got it. I got it too.” He released her with his left hand so he could run it over his slicked down hair and gave her a big-toothed, wolfish smile. “Only we’d be naked.” He shot a cocky grin over to his two companions—Chuck Stenson and Billy Garfield—who were leaning against the jukebox making kissing and whooping sounds.

Toby gripped his right wrist with one hand, tightening her hold on the utensils she held in the other. “I said let me go. Now!”

“Aw, be a sport, Green-Eyes.”

The bulge of his pelvis pressed into her abdomen, and she gasped in shock. Nausea tightened in her esophagus. “Wes Markham, I’m warning you…”

She shoved against him, but he didn’t budge.

He pulled her tighter. “Your momma’s a whole lot friendlier than you are. They say the apple don’t fall far from the tree, so how’s about you cut the pretense and we go someplace quiet? Winstead won’t miss you for a few minutes.”

Her cheeks heated. She didn’t dare look around. No doubt the customers were watching, listening. Elvis had stopped singing and everyone in the place could hear what he’d said about her mother. It wasn’t like they didn’t all know, though. Constance Lawson hadn’t exactly kept her escapades a secret.

Toby clenched her teeth and brandished the utensils. She spoke loud enough for everyone to hear. “Release me this instant, or I swear, you’ll be pulling this steak knife out of your eyeball.”

He held her gaze for a split second, then gave a laugh that was somewhere between nervous and furious. “Sure, sure. Okay.” He released her and stepped back. “I was just foolin’ around anyway. I got better things to do with my time than waste it on a used up chick like you.”

Muffled laughter rose around her. Oh God, she could crawl into a hole.

“How about you apologize to the lady, then beat it?”

Toby whirled at the male voice. Noah Rivers stood behind her, looking handsome and sharp in his police uniform—even with his dark hair in the military buzz cut. Her knees weakened, and tingles swept over her skin. She swallowed against the sudden dryness in her throat. She’d heard he was back, but hadn’t seen him until now. And what a time to have a reunion.
